Do Northeast Portland Like A Pro
By now, the offbeat charm of “Portlandia” needs no introduction. It’s wacky, it’s crunchy, it’s hipstery, and we love it.
Meet Cecilia Doan, a Portland native — smart, stylish, quirky, cool as shit. She is a living, breathing, hot blonde version of Portland. When I visit, she’s who I want to hang with which makes her the perfect curator for our guide to the Northeast neighborhood she now calls home. Full of history, DIYers and window shopping, the hood is definitely worth a visit. Here, Cecilia’s take on her hometown and her number one spots:
“Portland is an incredible place to be a creative or an entrepreneur, from owning a small business all the way to huge tech startups or corporate companies. Some of the most authentic things come out of Portland and you best believe some of the friendliest people in the country, and the best food.”

My neighborhood go-to on an average day. We get “das boot” way more often than we should. It’s a great place for a weeknight dinner or on the weekend with a group of friends.

Delicious and authentic Cuban food. The building is hard to miss because it’s so bright. I’ve been going here for more than 10 years.

One of my favorites. Italian, French, Spanish tapas and more than 50 wines to choose from. You can get everything from rabbit stew, to pate and guinea fowl, to French butter and bread.

Church Bar

Yes, a church themed bar. Lord save us all. Fun to dance or just have a drink or late night bite. Always go in the photo booth!

Angel Face

From the same folks that opened Navarre—it’s actually right next door to it. It’s new and has beautiful hand-painted wallpaper.

One Grand Gallery

Friends run this gallery, and friends exhibit here too. You’ll find contemporary themed shows, such as Notorious B.I.G. or American Flags.

Heart Coffee

Can’t name Portland without naming a coffee shop, right?

Hattie’s Vintage

If you love the 50’s and 60’s, this is a great vintage shop for you. I love elegant dresses, coats and hats. Sometimes they’ll get entire collections in from a fancy lady that happens to all be in my size.

Lots of lovely things in here. They carry Ashish, a really unique brand often working with sequins.

My name is Cecilia Doan. I am a native Portlander of Vietnamese heritage. I now reside in inner NE Portland in a converted auto body shop, tucked between a pie bakery and a meatball shop. I’m a digital strategist and PR & Communications Manager at Instrument, an independent digital creative agency. I also moonlight as an illustrator, having founded the blog, Shit Bloggers Wear, which has been featured in magazines such as Elle, Glamour, and I’ve done collaborations with Topshop, GrandLife Hotels, The Coveteur, and more. I’m addicted to shoes— teetering on stilettos and swaggin’ in Nikes. I recently went blonde. My life, aesthetics, and demeanor are all inspired by traveling, infused with my multicultural upbringing.
